Combatting social isolation and building strong communities

National data reports increased levels of loneliness during the Covid-19 pandemic, with Hackney and Tower Hamlets reporting rates of loneliness above the UK average.

Our annual Tea Dance brings together hundreds of older residents and volunteers from our corporate partners to combat loneliness and build strong communities.

Christine Smith (left) “Seeing everyone together again has been a blast: we all had a lovely time. I do not get out a lot. With age comes mobility issues. Having to go into lockdown was unpleasant, not being able to see loved ones. It can affect anyone mentally negatively. That’s why occasions like today are vital for older people to have good times and make happy memories.”

Ruby Harvey (right) “I struggled with feeling isolated during lockdown – it was a dreadful experience. Coming out of lockdown, I hate the feeling of isolation even more. It is important for pensioners like me to still be out and about and not suffering alone.”
