Connecting Communities reaches 2,000 families across East London

The Connecting Communities initiative, led by East End Community Foundation, has reached a major milestone, supporting its 2,000th digitally excluded family in East London.

To mark the occasion, we returned to Stebon Primary School in Tower Hamlets, one of the first schools to partner with Connecting Communities in 2020.  On the day, 80 families received digital packages consisting of a new device, 12 months free broadband and a training programme that ensures they stay safe online.

This milestone reflects both the scale of delivery and our sustained commitment to tackling digital inequality across the East End.

Despite this progress, the need remains significant. It is estimated that over 100,000 families in the East End still lack access to a suitable device or internet connectivity, limiting opportunities for children and families to fully engage in education, employment and everyday life.

What began as a targeted pilot has grown into a multi-partner programme. The success of Connecting Communities has been made possible through collaboration between The Letta Trust, Poplar HARCA, Tower Hamlets Council and Community Fibre as well as Newham Council, Barings, and Northern Trust. Together, our partnership continues to respond to local need while building sustainable pathways to digital inclusion.

Returning to Stebon Primary School marks a full-circle moment for the programme, highlighting both its growth and the strength of long-term, place-based partnerships. Schools remain at the heart of delivery, ensuring support reaches families who need it most.

Tracey Betts, Chief Executive of East End Community Foundation, said:
“Reaching our 2,000th device milestone is an important moment for our Connecting Communities initiative. It reflects the strength of long-term partnerships and what can be achieved when organisations work together with a shared commitment to tackling inequality.

Digital access is no longer a luxury, it is essential. Through Connecting Communities, we are supporting families with the tools, skills and connectivity they need to thrive.”

Jo Franklin, Chief Executive of The Letta Trust, said:
“We are incredibly proud to have supported Connecting Communities from its early stages and to see the programme reach this significant milestone.

Access to a device and reliable internet connection can transform a child’s educational experience and a family’s opportunities. This milestone is not just about numbers, it represents thousands of families now better connected, more confident, and more able to engage with the digital world.”

As the programme continues to grow, partners remain committed to expanding its reach and ensuring more families across East London can benefit from access to essential digital tools and support.
