East End Community Foundation wins at the Charity Awards 2024

London, 9th July 2024 – East End Community Foundation is delighted to announce that it has taken the top prize in the Grantmaking & Funding category at this year’s Charity Awards, the longest-running and most prestigious awards scheme in the charity sector.

The Foundation was recognised for its Tackling Pensioner Poverty funding programme that is upskilling local charities so that they can support older people to identify and claim any welfare benefits that are due.

Three local groups were each awarded grants of up to £20,000 and provided with specialist advice training.  As a result, since January 2023 more than 150 pensioners have so far received advice on benefits and been supported to claim over £400,000 between them.

Alongside the nine other category winners, the Overall Winner and the recipient of the Daniel Phelan Award for Outstanding Achievement, East End Community Foundation was presented with the trophy at a black-tie ceremony at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London on 9 July, hosted by broadcaster, commentator and writer Baroness Ayesha Hazarika.

The Charity Awards shortlist is chosen by an independent panel of expert judges, themselves all eminent figures in the charity sector. The judges score each entry against six Hallmarks of Excellence before coming together for two days of challenge and discussion to select the winners.

Matt Nolan, chief executive of Civil Society Media which organises the Charity Awards, congratulated the Foundation on winning the highly-coveted award.  He said:

For 24 years, the Charity Awards has been shining a spotlight on the vital and inspiring work that UK charities carry out right across the country. In 2024, the sector is contending with soaring costs, rising demand and shrinking donations, yet the resilience, ambition and innovation in these applications continues to impress and inspire us. In a year of record entries, East End Community Foundation should be hugely proud of this prize.”

Peter Hugh Smith, chief executive at Overall Awards Partner CCLA, said:

“Charities are experiencing extraordinary challenges, making it vitally important that we continue to promote their endeavours and celebrate excellence in the sector. This is why CCLA is proud to be the Charity Awards’ Overall Partner again this year – so we can play our part in highlighting the heroic work of charities large and small, right across the UK.

“I pay tribute to all 10 winners who deserve full credit for their outstanding work.”

Tracey Walsh, chief executive at East End Community Foundation, said:

“We are honoured to receive the Charity Awards Grantmaking & Funding award for our Tackling Pensioner Poverty project. This recognition is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team, the grassroots charities we are funding and our funding partners. Together, we are making a tangible difference in the lives of older people living in poverty. Our success is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when we collaborate. Phase two of our project is already underway, training and funding even more grassroots charitable organisations, and we are excited to see the results “
