Supporting older men’s health and wellbeing

Through our Life Chances Housing Association Consortium Fund, we awarded grants to help local residents access support and opportunities to increase confidence, develop new skills, secure employment, and gain greater financial security.

The East End Over 50s Consortium run the Link In Project, which works with men, including those living with mental health issues, to help reduce social isolation and improve mental and physical wellbeing.

Based around 12 ‘meet-ups’, the men participated in five workshops to provide emotional and practical support including signposting and advocacy, as well as mindfulness and breathwork sessions led by two regular members of the project to help the men cope with moments of challenge and anxiety. They also attended day trips, including the Science and Maritime Museums, Chislehurst Caves, RAF Hendon, and the Nene Valley Railway near Peterborough.  As a result, the majority of the men reported feeling more hopeful, positive and relaxed. Relationships between the men now extend beyond the project, with the core group keeping in contact via what’s app and meeting socially.

“Link In is at the core of my recovery. Everything else radiates from it.”
