Our expert grants team has managed the London Borough of Tower Hamlets’ Small Grants programme, funding organisations to encourage innovation and community resilience, as well as tackling issues such as loneliness and social isolation.
DeafWatch were awarded a grant of £5,000 for their collaboration with 888 Film Club, Deaf Rave and Sign For All Community to create a monthly film and club night accessible for people who are deaf.
Events were attended by over 330 people, from both deaf and hearing communities, with one participant saying. “I had such a great time and the atmosphere was amazing. There were different ways to interact such as face painting and the club night. As a hearing person, it was a fun opportunity to take part in a deaf community event and to practice my sign language.”
Jacob Laviniere, who is 10 years old, was brought to the Minions screening and had a great time fulfilling his dream of being a DJ. Despite being deaf, he is heavily into music and was taught how to spin the decks by one of the deaf DJs from Deaf Rave. His mother told us all about his music obsession but also how she has had to fight for his education within the school system. They were both so happy to come to a place where he could learn and have fun at the same time without it being an issue and simply play like any other child.
