Monowara Begum Ali’s daughter attends Colombia Primary School. Six months ago she and her daughter received a free laptop and broadband as part of the Connecting Communities Project.
“The project has made a real impact to my child’s development. I have watched her flourish and her confidence has greatly improved. Being able to have access to a device has dramatically improved my daughter’s education. We live in a digital world right now, so it’s important children can learn to navigate online safely.
During the lockdown, because my daughter didn’t have access to a laptop, I saw that she was struggling with her school work. It affected her mental health too as she wasn’t able to socialise with friends and didn’t have access to the collaborative virtual space that is provided by the school.
But six months on, I don’t really feel that I’m worried or stressed about her being behind with her education. Her homework and grades have improved significantly. This is because she has really taken ownership of the chromebook! She is completely independent now, and is able to navigate the web and access school materials. And she’s now able to socialise online with her school friends – so she’s not be bored at home!
On a personal level, the project has brought me and my daughter closer together. She encourages me to sit down with her and use her laptop. Sometimes we play games or watch videos and it has strengthened our bond. My daughter now can teach me a few tricks online and I couldn’t be prouder of her!
Away from schoolwork my daughter and I use the internet to surf for information on local events that our whole family can attend, for instance, through websites like Tower Hamlets. We also like shopping online too. It’s very satisfying to find great deals!
I must thank EECF and their partners because this initiative must no doubt being having a hugely positive impact on lots of other families too.”
