Empowering Families Through Connecting Communities

Six months ago, Stewart Headlam Primary School, located in Tower Hamlets, took part in Connecting Communities. This initiative aimed to equip 26 families with the necessary tools and skills to utilise the power of technology for education and personal growth. Motiur Rahman, the Home-School Liaison Worker, was tasked with overseeing the implementation of this programme and facilitating communication between the school, families, and the coordinators.

Project overview

Connecting Communities provided Stewart Headlam Primary School with 26 brand new devices, 12 months free broadband, and IT training for families. We aimed to not only provide access to technology but also to empower parents with the necessary skills to effectively support their children’s education. Motiur Rahman played a pivotal role in organising training sessions, coordinating with families, and ensuring smooth integration of technology into their daily lives.

Impact and Testimonial

Having successfully deivered the project Motiur Rahman reflects on the transformative impact of the programme on the participating families. According to him, the response from parents has been overwhelmingly positive. “It’s been a total game-changer. Parents were so used to tapping away on their mobile phones, but now, they’ve got a desire for laptops. Once they got their hands on them and started playing around, they realised how vital it is for their kids to have access to the internet and a laptop for studying. They’ve picked up basic IT skills in a flash and feel empowered to lend a hand with homework. Seeing the impact firsthand has been nothing short of amazing. It’s lit a fire under parents, inspiring them to sign up for extra educational courses. Before, laptops seemed out of reach. Now, they’re surfing the web with ease using their laptop for job opportunities and local services. Some families were skeptical at first, but once they got a taste, they realised it’s not a luxury – it’s a must-have.”

Conclusion

The Connecting Communities project at Stewart Headlam Primary School exemplifies the transformative power of technology when coupled with targeted support. Through dedicated efforts and collaboration between the school, families, and coordinators, we have not only provided access to technology but have also fostered a culture of lifelong learning and self-improvement within the community. As Motiur Rahman summarises, technology is no longer a luxury but a necessity, and the programme has played a vital role in ensuring that all families have the tools and skills to thrive in the digital age.
